25 years on We Remember a Gen X Leader, Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain

Where were you when our Gen X leader Kurt Cobain died?

In the 90s I was living in Tallahassee, Florida attending Florida State University. I listened to grunge rock all day and partied to techno music all night. Sometimes I even attended classes, sometimes even mine. Life was easy running around in my recycled jeans and Doc Martens. I even lucked into catching Nirvana literally months before the death of Cobain. The band came to the Leon County Civic Center Arena on December 2, 1993 and a friend of mine had an extra ticket. Who knew that as we crowd-surfed that night (my first and only time actually crowd-surfing) we were becoming part of a history that would forever impact our world?

Kurt Cobain died 25 years ago today. One of the most iconic rock musicians of all time and hailed as the spokesman, Cobain epitomized our generation. Our Gen X leader even after death though in the true spirit of our generation he would have rejected the title.

Cobain was a lot of things. He was a troubled artist. He was a compassionate soul who spoke out against injustices – including gay rights before most anyone else was doing it. A gifted singer/songwriter he helped found an entire rock movement and continues to be one of the most influential rock musicians today. 25 years after his death we remember him and are inspired by his achievements and most of all his music.
