Happy Hour: Low Calories Shandy

Shandy

There’s a lot of hullabaloo going on in the media about Bud Light’s latest marketing campaign alienating their core audience. I mean, they did. Let’s face it, their main buyers are frat boys. That’s why their campaigns about hot babes in bathing suits and funny “Real American Hero” commercials work. It’s fine (great even) if you want to diversify your audience but you can’t completely bite the hand that feeds you.

It’s the same as if a beloved band wants to change their sound from one decade to the next. They should take care to do so in a way that doesn’t upset their fans who have been buying all of their albums and attending their concerts since day one. It’s a delicate balance.

I’d just like to point out that the stuff wasn’t the best tasting anyway. Then again, I’m not their core audience. I’ve only recently discovered that it can be pretty decent if you make it into a Shandy, or Shandy Light as I like to call it. It is, however, pretty decent if you make it into a Shandy, or Shandy Light as I like to call it…and a better tasting light beverage is what this article is really about.

So without further ado…

Lately I have been pretty good about diet and exercise as well as cutting back on alcohol intake. I still like to socialize at the pub. The goal is (usually) not to get drunk. I just like to hold a pint in my hand along with everyone else. What I need is a low-alcohol, low-calorie alternative that doesn’t taste like, well, stale urine. Enter the low calories Shandy.

What’s A Low Calories Shandy?

Or any Shandy for that matter? In a visit to our local pub early in our relationship, my husband Ben introduced me to the Shandy. A Shandy is made from lager beer and British lemonade (for the Americans reading this, British lemonade is carbonated and tastes like Sprite.) The combination makes a great light and refreshing drink for cooling off in the summertime. Perfect for sitting in the sunshine on an outdoor patio.

Shandy Light

As Bud Light and Michelob Ultra (my preferred light beer really) were popular in America in the 90’s, they were the perfect purchase for our 90’s theme party last summer. After the event we had a couple of cases leftover. We have been able to put them to good use making our own Shandy Lights. Now that warm weather is finally finding its way to London again, we can sit on our patio sipping our new concoction.

The great thing is that not only is light beer low in calories (only 73 per bottle!) but it only has 3% alcohol. That’s half the alcohol of most beer and wine. Almost like drinking water and even better with the lemonade. Hold one in your hand all night without getting drunk or fat. Personally, I think that is the part that is worth the hullaballoo.
